attire & Okra Hats

This year’s theme is Garden Glam!
Gold, glitz, glitter are in order for this 10th annual OkraFest.  Nothing is too much, the concept of 'over-the-top' is simply just right, and we can't wait to see Galveston's finest sparkle and shine.

(This page will soon include an event color palate, styling tips and examples of clothing from nearby retail establishments---keep your eyes peeled!)

Don your finest, loudest, and straight-up fabulous attire, showcase your unique style—and don’t forget your Okra Hat!  While not required, all attendants are encouraged to create and wear your very own crown, bowler, sombrero, porkpie, tiara, pillbox or beyond. Interpret it as you wish, and resist any limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No. While it’s obviously the primary theme, we want you to wear a chapeau inspired by okra, summer produce, nature, agriculture, summer in Galveston—whatever speaks to you! However, if you hope to win a prize in the competition, there must be okra incorporated into your fashion somewhere.

  • Several secret judges will spend the night covertly assessing everyone’s fashion. Before the night is over, several winners will be announced. Fame and adoration will follow.

  • No! Make a purse, a necklace, a suit! The whole point is to have fun and be utterly unserious.

  • Nope! The most important thing is that you look fabulous. Make it yourself, ask a friend, buy it from the internet–or even better, put in a custom order with our friend at Hurricane Headdress.

  • It’s not an option this year, but if enough folks tell us they want us to, we’ll add it to the 2024 lineup!
